Dennis Jarvis has the unique energy of a modern renaissance man - to view his art is to share in the experience of being a World-Wide, Award-Winning, Self-Made, Creator-Owner, Pro-Athlete, Artist-Sculptor, Craftsman-Surfboard Shaper. The passion it takes to become a multidisciplinary auteur is expressed in his art, conveyed by bold colors, black and white design and the visual impact of shape. Working with mixed media, resin, paint, fiberglass, acrylic paint and foam, the work of Jarvis creates a boomerang effect. “If my work incites an emotion, that is the biggest compliment I can get.” Jarvis explains his philosophy of art is to cause a reaction. “Everything has a frequency, a vibration, an energy and we as humans react to that.” The influence of his artwork started 50 years ago as he ignited the bold graphic imagery that continues to define the extreme sports art scene.
WHY I DO WHAT I DO

WHAT DEFINES YOU?
I Identify as leaning toward the Color field category. I still enjoy doing simple pastels but I am in love with the contrasting colors. I once read your Amygdala and the size shape of it determines your political influence. Conservatives by happenstance seem to have larger ones than Liberals (lol). But I am not a political person however I love the illusion of control I find in the abstract world. Color field/abstract painting is an addiction. Much like surfing is. As you enter the ocean the frequency of the salt water touches you, the ocean has a vibration and emits in its own way positive/negative -SOUND-LIGHT-FREQUENCY-VIBRATION much the same way colors do. There are those that cannot connect and get the “high” from surfing and similarly they might think abstract art is amateurish, but color, space, density all matter. It is all relative just like catching a wave, each one is different. It was also said, serious folks, like those that don't get jokes – seem to be a bit more “stand-offish” to abstract art. Whereas, really “smart” people tend to be more into detailed work like illustrations or lifelike designs. I by nature am a sarcastic, cynic who loves to laugh. Although I can do detailed work, it isn’t as expressive to my soul, I am aware my destiny is not to become one of the great illustrators of our time, not that I can’t work in that space but because that doesn’t move me, I don’t have a passion for it. However, the energy of two colors battling it out on canvas really gets me going.
WHY THE X SHOWS UP IN MY ART?
Growing up Elvis Costello was one of my favorite artists- his song, “Watching the Detectives” was one of my favorites. I always sung along to it with confidence. Then one day I was painting a piece that wasn’t going very well. The song came on the radio. Of course, I was singing but this time, it didn't sound right. So, I googled the lyrics and I was actually shocked. I thought the lyrics were- red “dots” under a legal X. I mean that makes sense, right? A red dotted line, but nope. The actual lyrics are “Red dogs under illegal legs” – I guess dogs are shoes in England and of course the song is about the murder of a prostitute (it is illegal.) I stepped back and looked at the art piece I was working on, I had a broad brush and some black paint and drew a big X on the canvas- and it worked! I loved it and it felt right. So I review each piece I am doing and usually ahead of time define the color and size of the X before the piece is finished. Yes the original X sold pretty quick!
WHY DID I CHOOSE THE ELLIPTIC SHAPES?
Elliptic: defined- “a deliberate obscurity of style or expression”
-
I find the shape visually stimulating and has a calming effect.
-
The Elliptic is and extension of an Ellipse or 360-circle is balanced and soothing.
-
Personally, I feel ART should inspire a reaction. Be it good or bad - calm or chaos art Resonates a frequency/vibration it’s my job to cause a reaction.
